How to start a business- Part 5: Doing online business

In the last part on how to do business, I talked about different criteria and aspects of doing online business.

Here is a comparatively easy part for you to have a little recap on the last part:

If you haven’t read the last part of how to start a business, then I urge you to go back and read that first because part 4 and this part are going on in a sequence.


The chart shows you a simple thing. While doing online business, you can do either business of product or service. And of these two types of business, the product or the service can be either physical or digital.

This part will be focusing mainly on the detailed discussion on the type of digital products of online business.


So, what is a “digital” product or service?

If I want to define a proper structure on the term digital products or digital services, it might be quite impossible. But what I can do is to give you an idea of the concept. Imagine all the things that you can do professionally through a computer device. Could be graphical work, could be website-related work, could be other forms of art or craft objects. All these are combined known as digital service providing or product selling.

From a broader sense of speaking, everything is a service. But there are also other forms of online business, in which the selling of premade products are sold. For those, type of trading, you can say that it is product selling.

Let’s talk a bit more about the product and services business online.


Digital products


Don’t get me wrong. Many of you might think about amazon, eBay, and similar other websites where you sell real or physical products on the online platforms. But that is not what I am talking about.

Those are all physical products or services. But we are talking about digital services or products. If I was selling books online, in which you give the order online, and I deliver the book to you, there is nothing digital about that. Because, if you were not giving me the order via online, and told me that you needed that book via my phone number, I still will be able to provide you with the same service or product. So there is nothing digital about that.

Suppose you were giving me an order to make you a designed banner for your business. And I do the design via Adobe illustrator or similar other graphics making app, and then deliver it to you, via email, or even deliver you on the person via file transfer. That would be a digital product because the actual product or the service that I am doing for you is something that you can not touch. It is in a digital form.

Remember when I told you about the book? If I am writing a book for you in the form of an eBook, or virtual document file, like Microsoft office word document, that can be considered as a digital product for this cause.

I hope that by now, you are having a rough idea about what I am talking about. Let’s look at some of the scopes that we might have when we are talking about digital products or services.


Forms of digital products or services

Before starting the list, there is one thing that I need to clarify. When we are talking about delivering a digital product, if we are making the product by ourselves, we can also name it as service—a service of that specific product making. So it doesn’t matter which one you are quoting it, it’s all the same thing.

Here is a small discussion on which you can understand what type of products or services that you can start doing business on:


Graphical services:

You can start making and delivering something that you are good at doing so. Let’s say you are a good design maker. You can design a logo, banner, flyer, and so on. You can start your business of graphical services online. You can advertise about your work on the social media platform, make a name for your own business. And you can also get enrolled in the freelance marketplaces available on the internet. Another thing is that most of these points that I am about to discuss from now on are going to be mentioning freelance marketplaces such as Fiverr or Upwork etc.

Creative and technical works:


While doing the business on digital products, there is an ocean of opportunities in which you can dive into. You need to keep in mind that this is not just getting products on the wholesale and sell them on retail. This type of service requires specific knowledge and expertise in the sector that you will be giving service. So, keep that in your mind.

In this sector, if you are good at building and designing websites, designing blogs, etc. and doing other technical things like SEO or anything else, you can start your own business. At the start, it might be a little bumpy ride. But after a time, once you have a certain period of experience and a small reputation, it will be much easier.


Writing is best if you do not have other technical working expertise.

Trust me, to be a good writer; you do not need to be like Dan Brown or Stephen King. Because those famous writers are writers of fiction books, that is totally a different sector from which we are talking about right now. When you are browsing over the internet for some information, for recreation or for pure education, there are thousands and thousands or article that pop-up in front of you by your search terms. Those articles did not fall down from the skies. Someone has written the piece of article that is in front of you right now. You are reading this blog, and I had to write all this information for you, right?

So, why not be a writer like this for making money?

You can be a writer in many ways.

  1. You can get a profile on the marketplaces as a writer and bid for writing jobs. There are as simple works as just typing words from a pdf file to a Word file. Or if you have knowledge about doing research and writing about any topic, you can be an article writer. Article writers have a really high demand nowadays. Millions of websites are being added every year. And all those owners of those websites require writers. You can join similar forums for looking for works on blogs or websites. Or you can utilize the marketplaces for getting writing jobs.
  2. When you are doing the business of selling writing services, you can have other full-time jobs and other business too. Suppose you have a day job. You are working 6-8 hours a day. In that time of work, if you get some free time, or even when you are back home, you can easily work and make some money for yourself on the side. After dinner, just taking one hour to do writing jobs will easily be able to make you a decent amount of money by the end of the month.
  3. You can write other people’s business copy, sales copy, assignment, thesis and many other types of documents. And when you have a certain amount of reputation over the online marketplaces as mentioned before, you will be struggling over cancelling the excess orders. It’s going to be turning out that much good. You can even hire a number of people who have the expertise to do that type of work. You take a little percentage over their work. They get to have decent work, and you get a stable and well-reputed digital service providing business.


There are literally hundreds of other digital services providing that you can get yourself engaged into. You need to look out for the opportunities.
